Scottish Institute for Northern Renaissance Studies

M.Litt in Renaissance Studies

Under the auspices of SINRS the Universities of Strathclyde and Stirling offer a jointly-taught M.Litt programme in Renaissance Studies. The programme is currently administered by the University of Strathclyde and is taught by a team of staff with recognised expertise in the field drawn from the English and Scottish Literature Departments of the Universities of Strathclyde, Stirling and Glasgow.

The course is aimed at those who are interested in the literary and broader cultural aspects of the Renaissance and who wish to acquire a more specialised knowledge of this rich domain of study.

The aims of the course are to:

  • Introduce students to key areas of critical debate in Renaissance Studies by comparing different canonical accounts of the period

  • Explore the distinctiveness of Northern Renaissance culture, including Scotland, and consider how historical and theoretical paradigms might be adapted to reflect this

  • Develop a critical understanding of the variety of genres, media and pratices employed by Renaissance writers and visual artists

  • Equip students with the technical skills necessary for conducting independent research in Renaissance Studies, presenting information and constructing scholarly arguments.

The M.Litt culminates in the writing of a 15,000 word supervised dissertation on a topic of the student’s choice.

The M.Litt is offered full time over 12 months or part-time over 24 months.

Alternatively, candidates have the option of graduating with a Postgraduate Certificate (4 months) or a postgraduate Diploma (8 months) in Renaissance Studies.

Core Classes and the Research Skills Class are normally taught at the University of Strathclyde, and Optional Classes are taught at the University where the tutor is based.
